Conceived by owner Ed Tschernoscha in 2002, Baja Fish Gear was initially intended to be located in Los Barriles, Baja California Sur with the acquisition of East Cape Tackle. After a year of negotiations that finally fell through, Ed began looking for a location between Los Angeles Harbor and Redondo Beach King Harbor to service the greater South Bay - San Pedro area. The original location was finally found in November 2002 and within a few short months, Baja Fish Gear was opened January 23, 2003 in Lomita, exactly six miles from the Los Angeles Harbor and Redondo Beach King Harbor. The retail location from the start has been filled will excessive amounts of custom handmade lures from Hawaii to designer hooks for even the most particular long range specialist. Baja Fish Gear’s mission statement has always been: To provide the best available selection of tackle at a fair price and information for big game, local and long range fishing from Southern California to Baja California, and beyond.
Ed Tschernoscha began his fishing career on the fine white sands of South Padre Island, Texas in the mid 1960's. Ed completed his degrees in Marketing, Accounting, Business Administration, and Computer Information System Applications in Riverside, California.
In the early 1990's, Ed joined up with West Marine Products becoming one their major authorities on cruising boats up and down the Baja peninsula and executed some of the most successful seminar series as a keynote speaker on cruising, Baja, and marine electronics as well as increasing sales over twenty two percent in 24 months managing one of their mature locations in Southern California. After experiencing what Baja had to offer as a fishing destination, Ed began expanding his knowledge on everything to do with fishing Baja.
His research and experience has paid off’ landing the largest tuna in the world’s largest tuna tournament, The WON Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot Tournament in 2005, and has been winning tournaments or placing in the top ten percent ever since. Ed also holds the all tackle record for Yellowfin Tuna in the King Harbor Marlin Club.
Sam De LaTorre has been working with Baja Fish Gear for over 7 years. He is our expert Sales Associate for local and long-range tackle. So if you're wondering what to take our your next long-range trip, ask Sam. He can assist you with selecting the best lures, hooks, connections, and rod/reels combos.
If Sam is not working at the shop he's on one of our charters. In 2007 he was on one of our favorite trips, with the First String out of H&M Landing in San Diego. They went on the hunt for some nice size yellowtails and some yellowfin tuna at Guadalupe Island. Needless to say, Sam doesn't come home empty handed. He landed several yellowfin and a handful of yellowtails. He means business when he's out fishing!
Allan joined our team about 4 years ago. He is a local fisherman and prefers fishing the local 1/2-day to 3/4-day boats to target the bass and yellowtail. He is also a big fan of surf fishing some of our local beaches. Ever wondered what you can catch locally, without spending too much out of your pocket? Ask Allan. He knows the tricks and can give you some good advice.
Allan is also our resident Reel Service Specialist. We've seen him fix some pretty impossible looking items. Our team realizes the economy has put a damper on our pocketbooks, but that doesn't mean we have to stop fishing. Get creative and use your old reels. Newer is not always better. So dust off those old reels and bring them in for servicing. You'd be surprised that it doesn't take much to get on the water.
Stevie Kuljis (pronounced like "cool jis") Our newest addition to the Baja Fish Gear team is our merchanding expert. Although she is new to the fishing industry, she is developing a strong passion for the water. Her first multi-day trip was on the El Dorado, and like the typical good luck girl, she slayed them. The albacore were bitting and she was hooked! Needless to say, she is now building her tackle inventory for the next trip of the season.
